Topic: Vulnerability and Autonomy in Research: Lessons from Pediatric Studies

During this 60-minute session, we reevaluate the concepts of vulnerability and autonomy in research. Examples of pediatric research will be used to introduce ongoing ethical debates about equity and access, consent and assent, acceptable risk exposure, and biobanking and genomic research. Attendees will be encouraged to explore the relevance of these issues in their own studies.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this forum, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the vulnerability-autonomy continuum in research participants
  • Describe the importance of risk and benefit assessments to involving children and adolescents in research
  • List one or more strategies to increase equity in research with "vulnerable" populations
